A conversation with Israeli Composers Session - Or and Feliza Zohar, Daphna Rosenberg and Yoel Sykes (Nava Tehila)

Feliza & Or Zohar are composers and performers of sacred music. Based in the Galilee, they broadcast and tour internationally, sharing their music, teachings and life experiences. Feliza & Or have released three albums: Lev Tahor (2007) Mikolot Mayim (2016) Kets Hap’laot (2020). In 2021, Feliza & Or Zohar founded Havayah Center of Being, a retreat center and guesthouse in the Galilean village of Hararit.

Rabbi Or Zohar is the Reform rabbi of the Misgav Region in the Galilee, founder of Hibura School for Kabbalah and Jewish Spirituality, and co Executive Director of the Spirit of the Galilee Association. Rabbi Zohar was ordained at the Jerusalem campus of HUC and received his BA from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has a Masters Degree in Jewish Philosophy from Tel Aviv University, where he is currently working towards a PhD in Kabbalah studies.

Feliza Bascara-Zohar is a singer-songwriter, song leader, artist and choreographer. She teaches a mindful holistic approach to worship, which she calls Embodied Prayer and practices Voice Movement Therapy. She has an MA in Expressive Art Therapies from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Musicology and Literature from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Daphna Rosenberg is a singer, guitarist and a main prayer leader at Nava Tehila, the Jewish Renewal community in Jerusalem for the past 15 years. She composes original music to prayers and poetry and specializes in musically leading life cycle ceremonies. Daphna has been traveling extensively to share, present and teach the Nava Tehila t’filla b’tzibur musical methods around the Jewish world. Her music is known around the world and serves in the area of spiritual care for the ill and dying, and in creating heart-to-heart connections between people from different cultures and traditions. She is currently involved in musically and spiritually leading and organizing Jewish meditation retreats with Or Halev in Israel.

Yoel Sykes is a spiritual facilitator who co-creates intentional community through music and prayer, cultivating and teaching deep listening and open hearted communication. He studied music at the Center for Eastern Music in Jerusalem and flamenco guitar in the Fundacion de Christina Heeren school of Flamenco Arts in Seville, Spain.

Born and raised in Jerusalem, Yoel is known through his work as part of the Nava Tehila leadership team, where he has composed many melodies for Jewish liturgy, recorded 3 professional albums and co-led musical kabbalat Shabbat services for 13 years. Currently he lives in Boulder, Colorado, and studies Rabbinics and Hashpaáh (spiritual direction) in the ALEPH Ordination Program.

Yoel travels to synagogues around the U.S. and the world to lead transformative and healing prayer experiences, with the intention of creating space for people to return home into their hearts and to expand into the spaciousness of the soul, into community and into the infinite oneness within and beyond.
